MR. MICHAEL TCHUME
Mr. Michael Tchume is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Languages (English), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Central University. He obtained his B.A English degree with a diploma in Education at the University of Cape Coast in 1991.
He taught English Language and Literature in three prominent schools: Holy Child School (1991), Ghana National College (1992 - 1994) and Achimota School (1998 - 2000), Accra. He obtained his M Phil. English (Language) Degree from the Department of English, University of Ghana, Legon in 2001.
English Language has been his main area of specialization. The specific areas within the language studies in which he has shown great interest by way of teaching and researching include Varieties of English, English for Academic Writing, Stylistics¸ Business and Professional English, as well as English Proficiency Skills.
His research interest falls within the scope of Applied Linguistics. He is particularly interested in researching into the use of English for specific purposes. He is currently engaged in Register Studies, Stylistic Analysis, and Functional Textual Analysis of Media Discourse. He is also interested in investigating the Distinctive Pronunciation Features of the Spoken English of Non-Native English Speakers. Interestingly, his M Phil. English Language Progamme focused on the distinctive word stress patterns in the speech of non-native users of English.
Mr. Tchume is currently working on some three important research articles for publication in the Central University Journal:
a. The Role of Ideology in Corporate Communications – A Descriptive Study of Statement of Mission, Vision and Values of Selected Business Organization.
b. Language, Representation, and Corporate Identity – A Descriptive Study of Advertizing Slogans of Selected Business Organizations in Ghana
c. The Distinctive Stylistic Features of Newspaper Editorial Headlines – A Descriptive Study of the Electoral Headlines of Selected Newspapers in Ghana.
Interestingly, the abstract of the first research article: The Role of Ideology in Corporate Communication was accepted for publication in the first Inter-Institutional Conference Programme Handbook (2015) involving abstracts of some relevant research articles produced by scholars from the Language Center, University of Ghana, Legon and Central University
Two if his books on English Communication have already been published by Sylva Press Company in Accra: ‘Principles and Skills of Effective Communication (2010)’ and ‘Mastering the Keys for Successful Business Communication and Public Speaking (2012). These books are currently being reviewed and revised for renewed publication.
Mr. Tchume is currently engaged in a PHD in English Programme at the University of Cape Coast and he has been working on Register Variation within Business and Professional Discourses with specific focus on the Written Registers of the Newspaper Editorials, Annual Reports, and Research Articles produced by Selected Practitioners within the Non-Native English Speaking Environment.
