MRS. JOY AFUA ANKRAH

I am Mrs. Joy Afua Ankrah, an architect by profession. I obtained a Bachelor of Technology (Design) degree in Architecture from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 1989. My thesis project was on Institutional Architecture.

 

In 1993, l obtained Post Graduate Diploma in Architecture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. My thesis was on Industrial Architecture. Between January 1993 to November 1994, I worked with the 31st December Women’s Movement in Cape Coast and in Accra as project architect attached to the office of the then First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings. My duties included inspection of project sites in the Central Region and Volta Region, Ghana.

In 1995, I became an Associate Member of the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) having been successful at the professional examination. Between 1995 to1996, I worked in the office of Arch. Henry Yartey of Architects Incorporated, (an Accra based Architectural firm).

 I have worked as an architect with Sheltarch Ghana Limited, a Design and Build company (based in Accra) until 2009 when I took appointment as a Lecturer at Central University. 

My areas of interest are in Urban Design (sustainability of the urban environment), History of Architecture and Architectural Design.

My MSc. Thesis wass about the impact of ageing on accommodation needs of the elderly, the case of Tema. I am due to start my PhD studies in Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in October 2017. This research is about the conservation of inland wetlands towards a sustainable urban environment.
