CENTRAL UNIVERSITY HOSTS 1ST PAN-AFRICAN ROBOTICS COMPETITION (PARC 2019) IN GHANA4th Jul 2019
The 2019 edition of the Pan-African Robotics Competition and the first to be held in Ghana began yesterday 3rd July 2019 at the Miotso campus of the Central University.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Pro-Vice Chancellor,Professor John Ofosu-Anim welcomed competitors and participants from over 18 nations to the largest private university in Ghana. He stated that the university was happy to host the maiden edition of the competition to be held in Ghana on its campus which is one of the best university campuses in the nation and saw that as an acknowledgement for the good work being done at Central University.
Professor John Ofosu-Anim also added that in the advent of fast developing and expanding cities in Africa and the world, the focus of the 2019 competition which is ‘Solvable challenges: the making of African Smart Cities’ couldn’t have been more timely. Robots have increasingly in recent times been integrated into various aspects of human lives from medicine, agriculture , surveillance, construction and education. ”t is important for African countries to take advantage of this great resource in the light of the speedy life and increased consumption as well as the rate of expansion of cities in Africa thereby creating the need for balance in their management. Robots are believed to be a great tool for this balance”, he said. ‘Soon, I believe, robots will be able to read massive written information and be able to assist professionals like Doctors and Lawyers to arrive at more informed decisions and Africa should not be left out”; he further added.
According to the organisers, PARC 2019 challenges African students to devise solutions for the planning, design, management and transformation of future African cities in an increasingly complex urban environment using science and technology. Topics to be explored will include Artificial intelligence, smart and renewable energy, cybersecurity, driverless cars, citizen design and cognitive computing, smart transportation among others.
PARC is the Pan-African Robotics Competition, an initiative created to inspire the youth while promoting STEM education within the African community. PARC challenges are based on real-world topics relevant to science, technology, and the sustainable development of Africa. The participating nations represented are Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Djibouti, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast,Kenya, Liberia, Lesotho, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The completion ends on Saturday 6th July.
